Impact of Liquid Glass on Flutter

Does Liquid Glass impact Flutter? Simply: No

Flutter and new Liquid Glass

At WWDC 2025, Apple announced a rebuild of their UI called Liquid Glass. The Flutter team invested heavily in recreating Cupertino widgets to match the current iOS design.

Anyone using Cupertino widgets can still continue using them, but new Liquid Glass would mean rebuilding the whole UI.

There is an open question whether the Flutter team would be able to keep up with the new design, but they are not going to do it. At least, in my opinion.

Does it matter? Not really. Here is why:

1. Every app has its design

Most of the apps have their design, which is not based on the iOS design.

Every enterprise-level app has its own design to follow the branding and design of the company. Not to make Apple happy.

So, Flutter developers still need to create their widgets from scratch.

On the web, it is common not to follow any design system, and no one cares about it. The same applies to mobile apps. Yes, there are some practices which you should follow, but it is not a must.

2. Strong community

In the past releases, the Flutter team started to put emphasis mainly on improving the developer experience after giving up on the macros. For example, with the recent update of build_runner to 2.5.x the performance was increased.

If someone wants to use Liquid Glass, 100% percent the community will create a package for it.

Even now, you can see first developers posting about their first attempts to recreate the Liquid Glass design in Flutter.

3. React Native is not going to wipe out Flutter

React Native is a great framework, but it is not going to wipe out Flutter. Both frameworks have their strengths and weaknesses, and the choice of the framework depends on the use case.

Yes, React Native will come in with the new Liquid Glass design without any issues, because it is based on the native components. But it does not mean that companies will switch to it just because of that.

4. Using just Liquid Glass is not enough

Using just Liquid Glass is not enough to create a great app. Bringing value to the users through UX, functionality, and performance is what matters.

Conclusion

Flutter should become platform-agnostic framework, which is not tied to any platform. It should enable you to build any kind of app which you want without any restrictions.

This is not a hate post against Liquid Glass or Apple, as someone might think. I am just trying to point out that the new design is not going to change anything for Flutter developers, even if the Flutter team does not implement it.

This is also a warning for management to think twice before forcing developers to adapt apps to the new design. It is not worth it, and it is not going to bring any value to the users.

Build, ship your apps and do not worry about the new design. It is not going to change anything for you.
